| Badjao or Sea Gypsies of the Philippines

If you’ll visit Paseo del Mar along Valderosa Street, Zamboanga City. Landmarks are the famous Port Pilar Shrine and Lantaka by the Sea hotel at the other side; you’ll see most of our Badjao friends, showing off their diving skills while asking visitors to throw them some coins. I’m really not into it, “will throw some pennies and enjoy the scene of them racing to catch it” I mean you can hand it (literally) to them or you can as well try to shoot it in their lil’ vintas, but well, it said to be a tradition since poverty-stricken Badjao families living in coastal regions often beg for spare change from ferry passengers in the Philippines, so be it. (walang basagan ng trip hahaha)

Bajao’s or Badjau, Badjaw, have sometimes been referred to as the Sea Gypsies, although the term has been used to encompass a number of non-related ethnic groups with similar traditional lifestyles. The modern outward spread of the Badjao from older inhabited areas seems to have been associated with the development of sea trade in sea cucumber.
